"OMC (Outboard Motor Corporation) the parent company of Johnson and Evinrude outboards use the model number to determine the year of the engine the way to determine the year has changed several times.

Depending on the year range your motor falls into, you will find your engine year information in the model number differently."

First, Where is the model number on a OMC outboard?

Hopefully, the model number is still legible when you find it! One of the most common problems we encounter when helping people to identify parts for their engines is that after years of wear, the model number is no longer readable. We strongly recommend that you write down your engine model number somewhere safe so that you have an additional resource to refer to long after the original identification tag cannot be read.

  • Pre-1969 - OMC Engines - Please click HERE.

  • 1969-1979 - The year of the engine is right in the model number. For example, 150TXL78 is a 150hp engine from 1978. 65ESLR72 would be from 1972.

  • 1980-2010 - In 1980 OMC switched to a code system. The choose the word INTRODUCES and assigned numbers from 0-9 to to determine the engine year. The model year typically is the two letters proceeding the last letter which is just a model year suffix.
I N T R O D U C E S

EXAMPLE - A "ET" model would be a 1993. In 1999-2001 OMC introduces a 4-stroke engine. The model number code had to be updated to include 4-stroke engines, but the INTRODUCES code stills works the same.
